The cost of a lie

There once lived a boy who was known for being extremely notorious. He used to usually be left alone by his mother in the house, as she was a single mother working a 9-5 shift. To amuse himself, he used to shout, “Thief! Thief! There are thieves in my house!”. The neighbors would hurriedly come running to help the boy, however, to their shock, they would find no one present in the house. The boy would then start laughing while looking at their angry, bewildered faces. “Don’t cry ‘wolf’ when there’s no thief here!”, said the neighbors irritably. The boy would simply continue laughing at them.

After a while, he got bored and cried ‘Thief! Thief!’ again, managing to fool the neighbors a second time. The angry neighbors warned the boy a second time and left. The boy continued watching and laughing, as the crowd dispersed itself. After a few weeks, a real thief entered the boy’s house and the boy cried loudly ‘Thief! Please help me! A thief has entered my house. Help!”. But this time around, not a single soul turned up to help him. By evening, when his mother returned home, she realized the house had been swept clean of all material possessions. She questioned the boy ‘What happened? Who did this?’ The boy started sobbing loudly, ‘I called out the neighbors for help when a thief entered the house but no one came to help’. The mother hugged the boy, and tried to comfort him.

She then questioned the neighbors, ‘Why didn’t you come to my boy’s rescue when he was calling out for help?’. A young man, regretfully said ‘Your boy is known for lying and playing jokes. We all thought he was trying to fool us”. This is when an old man approached the lady and said “People stop believing liars even when they tell the truth. Tell your boy to always tell the truth and stop fooling people”.
